THE Basilica Minore del Sto. Niño de Cebu yesterday warned the faithful against the presence of a fake Facebook account using the name of the oldest Catholic church in the country.
In a public advisory, the Santo Niño Basilica friars asked netizens to report the existence of the social media page using its name sans authorization.
“We would like to remind all the faithful to be mindful and careful of pseudo accounts,” said Santo Niño Basilica.
“Help us report the following account https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61551013377259 as a fake/unofficial account of Basilica Minore del Santo Niño,” it said.
The Cebu City-based church said it only has one official Facebook page, which is https://www.facebook.com/BMSNCebu.
“Any other Facebook pages bearing the name of the Basilica is not in any way connected to the institution,” it said.
In addition, the Santo Niño Basilica said it does not promote the iconic image of the Santo Niño de Cebu with green vestment that supposedly brings “paswerte” or “lucky charms”.
“Sacred images remind us to deepen our trust and faith in God,” said Santo Niño Basilica.
The Santo Niño Basilica is a minor basilica in Cebu City that was founded in 1565. It houses the Santo Niño de Cebu, which is the oldest Christian artifact in the Philippines.
