FORMER President Rodrigo “Rody” Duterte on Monday night advised his daughter, Vice President Sara “Inday” Duterte to consider running for a seat in Congress instead of vying for the presidency if she wants to seek another elective post after her term ends in 2028.
“Ako sabihin ko kay Inday, sinabi ko kay Inday, ‘wag kang pumasok, wala kang makuha except the title of, being addressed Madam President or Mr. President. Hanggang doon lang (I will tell Inday, I told Inday not to [run for president], you will get nothing except the title of, being addressed as Madam President or Mr. President. That’s it),” the former president said in a video posted on the “Basta Dabawenyo” YouTube channel.
Duterte’s statement was in response to former presidential spokesman, Harry Roque, who asked what advice he would give his daughter about seeking the highest elective post in government in 2028.
The elder Duterte, prior to the 2022 presidential elections, had said he does not want the Vice President to run for president.
“Maybe congressman, ganon para makatulong ka sa bayan (Maybe congressman, something like that, to be able to help the country),” the former president suggested.
He added that while he is thankful for the support that Filipinos gave him when he ran and won the 2016 presidential polls, he no longer wants to repeat the experience or wish it for his daughter.
He warned Vice President Duterte that if she becomes president, “you should be ready for the long working hours and the multiple appointments and be ready to address the problems from different parts of the country.”
He also likened the experience to “having a nightmare that you would never forget.”
