SEN. Robinhood Padilla yesterday formally took over as president of the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino (PDP) vice Palawan Rep. Jose Chaves Alvarez who has resigned as party head.

Padilla took his oath before PDP vice chairman and former energy secretary Alfonso Cusi.

The PDP, in a statement, said Padilla assumed the top post based on the succession provision of the PDP Constitution.

Padilla was the party’s executive vice president before he assumed the party presidency.

“We thank Rep. Alvarez for leading PDP in the last 20 months, as he made it a stronger political party that is focused on helping drive reforms in the country so that every Filipino will have an equal opportunity to attain his greatest potential,” the PDP said.

It said Padilla’s primary task is to consolidate the party membership and prepare for the 2025 midterm elections.

“We are confident that under Sen. Padilla’s leadership, the party is in good hands and will continue to be a major force for reform and development in the country,” it added.

Since his election as senator in 2022, Padilla has been pushing for amendments to the 1987 Constitution and the passage of bills to improve peace and order in the country.

He is an advocate of the rights of Muslim Filipinos and the government’s campaign against illegal drugs.
