THE Metropolitan Manila Development Authority yesterday said roadworks in some areas of the metropolis will be suspended from August 17 to September 10 as part of the preparations for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 the country is co-hosting.
The agency said no mall-wide sales will be allowed during the same period in shopping malls along Epifanio delos Santos Avenue.
MMDA chairperson Romando Artes said the temporary suspension of roadworks, which covers re-blocking, utility works, pipe laying, road upgrading and excavation works will be implemented from EDSA Monumento to SM MOA, Kalayaan Ave., C5 Road to EDSA, along Diokno Boulevard, P. Ocampo St., Taft Ave. to Roxas Boulevard, Roxas Boulevard, NIA Road to UN Ave., along Meralco Ave., Ortigas Ave., EDSA to C5 Road and EDSA North Ave. to Agham Road in Quezon City.
Artes said the prohibition on the conduct of mall-wide sales along EDSA and other areas affected by the FIBA World Cup is meant to ensure that all affected roads “will remain passable, safe, and serviceable to all types of vehicles and pedestrians during the said period.”
He said the agency had informed the Department of Public Works and Highways-NCR Engineering Districts, local government units, utility companies, contractors, and shopping mall operators of the temporary suspension of roadworks and mall-wide sales.
This year’s FIBA Basketball World Cup will be co-hosted by the Philippines, Indonesia, and Japan from August 25 to September 10.
