A roll-on/roll-off vessel caught fire off Cebu City early morning yesterday, leaving two crew members injured.

Philippine Coast Guard spokesman Comm. Armand Balilo said the vessel, MTUG Super Shuttle 3, was not carrying any passenger at the time.

Balilo said the fire broke out at the vessel’s engine room at around 3:30 a.m. while it was at the vicinity of Shell Island in Cebu City en route to the Ouano Wharf in Mandaue City.

Balilo said an investigation is underway to determine what caused the fire.

After receiving information about the fire, Balilo said the PCG deployed the BRP Suluan to help combat the fire as “crew members tried to conduct firefight, but to no avail.”

Balilo said personnel of BRP Suluan evacuated two injured crew members who suffered first to second degree burns. The two were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Balilo said the fire was put under control at around 4:30 a.m. and put out 30 minutes later.
The vessel was later towed to Quano Wharf, said Balilo.
