THE Metropolitan Manila Development Authority yesterday said it would apprehend motorcycle riders still using the bike lane on Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA) starting today, Monday.
MMDA Chairperson Romando Artes said that based on their monitoring, the huge volume of motorcycle riders using the bike lane has prevented bikers from using them as mandated.
“The bicycle lane is exclusively for the use of cyclists or those who are using bikes, and not for motorcycle riders,” Artes said. “The bike lane is not meant to be a fast lane for motorcycle riders.”
Artes said he has directed traffic enforcers to strictly enforce the policy and start apprehending motorcycle riders who defy the policy.
“Starting tomorrow, August 21, we will apprehend motorcycle riders who continue to use the bike lane,” he said, adding violators will be fined P1,000 each.
MMDA data showed that from January to July this year, 149 of 170 persons killed in road accidents in Metro Manila were bikers or motorcycle riders.
Among the more than 20,000 individuals injured in road accidents over the same period, more than 12,000 were riding two-wheeled vehicles.
