Retired JBC member Toribio Ilao Jr., 78

THE Supreme Court said retired Judicial and Bar Council member Toribio Ilao Jr. passed away yesterday. He was 78.

In a statement, the High Court said the family of Ilao, a retired judge before becoming a JBC member representing the private sector, will hold a memorial service this Friday, August 30, at Chapel 101 (Fleur De Lis), ground floor of Sanctuarium on Araneta Ave., Quezon City.

“His inurnment service will be on September 3, 2024, 1 p.m. at the Garden of the Divine Word Columbary,” the SC said.

Ilao served as a JBC Regular Member from October 24, 2016 until July 18 this year.

The JBC is the body tasked by the Constitution to screen and vet nominees and applicants to the Judiciary.

Ilao started his judicial career in 2004 as presiding judge of Branch 52 of the Regional Trial Court of Puerto Princesa City, Palawan, and was later appointed presiding judge of Branch 266 of the Regional Trial Court of Taguig City until he retired on July 17, 2016.

Before he began his career in the judiciary, Ilao served as a researcher of the Secretariat of the Philippine Association of Colleges and Universities; a legal researcher and assistant attorney at the City Legal Office of Manila, and the personnel manager and company lawyer of the Manila Brickworks, Inc.

He also served as assistant to the chairperson of the National Parks Development Committee at Rizal Park in Manila and a senior legal analyst of the office of then Senator Orlando Mercado.

Ilao obtained both his Bachelor of Arts degree major in Philosophy and Bachelor of Laws Degree at San Beda College, Manila in 1967 and 1972, respectively.
