RESIDENTS of Barangay Muzon in San Jose del Monte, Bulacan voted in favor of dividing the area into four distinct and independent barangays in a plebiscite held last Saturday.
In a statement, the Commission on Elections said the four new areas will now be known as barangays Muzon Proper, Muzon, East, Muzon West, and Muzon South.
The voting was done in accordance with RA 11896 or the Act Dividing Barangay Muzon in the City of San Jose del Monte, Bulacan “on the vision to local governance in improving the delivery of basic social services for the general welfare of the whole constituency of the City.”
The poll body said Barangay Muzon has 43,771 registered voters but only 30.44 percent or 13,322 cast their votes.
Of the number, 92.51 percent or 12,324 were in favor o fsplitting the barangay in four, while 7.27 percent or 969 voted against.
“Once more, a very peaceful, orderly, honest, and credible electoral exercise,” the Comelec said.
Special elections for the new sets of barangay officials will be held 90 days from approval of the majority votes cast. The expenses for the elections will be shouldered by the local government unit.
The measure originated from the House of Representatives and was passed on June 30, 2020. It was amended by the Senate on January 17, 2022.
The bill lapsed into law on July 01, 2022 when former President Duterte did not veto it.
