GOVERNMENT forces arrested a ranking leader of the New People’s Army wanted for illegal possession of firearms on Tuesday night in Cadiz City, Negros.

Gaspar Davao, alias Aldong, 55, the secretary of the White Area Committee of the North Negros Front, secretary of Section Committee Tabacco and finance staff of the North Negros Front, was nabbed by soldiers and cops manning a checkpoint in Barangay Caduhaan.

Maj. Franco Ver Lopez, civil military operations officer of the Army’s 303rd Brigade, said Davao, in a passenger van, was not wearing a face mask in violation of quarantine protocol.

“While in the process of inspection, security personnel were able to notice that the said person tried to draw a hand grenade inside his bag prompting the security personnel to accost him,” said Lopez.

Further search resulted in the confiscation of eight cell phones, a cell phone charger, five ballpens, a flashlight, a sling bag and rebel documents.

Lopez said Davao, who was brought to the Cadiz City police for filing of charges, was later identified to be an NPA leader operating in the Negros provinces.

Lopez said Davao was the subject of a search warrant issued by a Quezon City court in October last year for illegal possession of firearms. He said Davao escaped during the service of the warrant.
