CONTINUOUS rains caused floods and prompted the cancellation of classes in several areas in Metro Manila yesterday.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said Metro Manila, Zambales, Bataan, Cavite, Batangas, and Occidental Mindoro experienced rains due to the southwest monsoon.
Weather specialist Meno Mendoza said the former tropical depression “Marilyn,” now a low pressure area (LPA) which exited the country Saturday night, may re-enter the country.
Mendoza said the weather system remained outside the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) as of yesterday morning, at a distance of 1,935 km northeast of Basco, Batanes.
“We continue to monitor this because it may return, re-enter our PAR within 48 hours (from yesterday morning),” said Mendoza.
Mendoza also said a shallow LPA was monitored 410 km east of Zambales and this is likely to develop into a tropical depression.
PAGASA is also monitoring a tropical storm, with international name “Peiphah,” which is way outside the PAR at 2,565 km east of northern Luzon as of yesterday morning, he said.
Mendoza said the Peiphah is packing sustained winds of 65 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 90 kph. It was moving northwest at 30 kph.
“The said tropical storm is not expected to enter our PAR,” said Mendoza.
PAGASA said it has monitored two LPAs inside the PAR and these will bring rains to the Cagayan Valley region.
In a 4 p.m. weather forecast, PAGASA said the first LPA was spotted some 895 km northeast of Basco, Batanes while the other was about 280 km west of Iba in Zambales. — With Rod Lagusad
