A RADIO broadcaster was shot and killed by a lone assailant in Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental yesterday morning, the third media man to be slain in the province since last year.

The victim was identified as Dindo Generoso, 67, of the local radio DyEM 96.7, a resident of Barangay Banilad, Dumaguete City.

Malacanang condemned the killing and assured the family and friends of Generoso that no stone would be left unturned as authorities go after those behind the slaying

“We condemn the killing of a broadcaster, blocktimer Dindo Generoso, who we understand was killed at around 7:25 this morning. We — or the President has directed the authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and to prosecute those behind the killing,” Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Salvador Panelo said during a briefing in Malacanang.

A report from the Dumaguete City police station said the attack occurred around 7:30 p.m. on Hibbard Ave. Police said Generoso was driving his Hyundai Elantra car when he was shot several times by the still unidentified suspect, who later fled aboard a motorcycle.

The National Union of Journalist of the Philippines said Generoso was on his way to the radio station.

Central Visayas regional police office director Brig. Gen. Valeriano de Leon said they are trying to establish the identity of the suspect, who he believes is a member of a gun-for-hire group.

“We still don’t have a suspect,” De Leon said.

As to the motive, De Leon said: “None yet (but) he is hard-hitting. There are many angles that we are looking into.”

On whether there are indications Generoso’s killing was work-related, De Leon said: “So far, none yet. Give us a little time.”

Pressed if Generoso has known enemies, De Leon said: “None. What we’re trying to validate is whether it’s work-related because he is hard-hitting.”
