TURNING cold turkey is still the best way to quit smoking, according to an official of the Lung Center of the Philippines (LCP).
Speaking at a televised public briefing, LCP consultant Dr. Guia Elena Ladrera said putting an abrupt stop to smoking is better than gradually reducing cigarette consumption if one really plans to stop smoking.
“Cold turkey or the sudden stop of smoking is usually what we are recommending to smokers,” said Ladrera.
Cold turkey is a method wherein smokers quit smoking abruptly without the aid of nicotine replacement therapy.
On the other hand, smokers may also take the gradual approach, wherein they reduce their cigarette consumption for a longer period.
This, Ladrera said, includes those who have failed in their attempt to stop the deadly vice.
“Do not get frustrated if you went back to smoking after attempting to stop it. Don’t give up on yourself,” said Ladrera.
She stressed that the move to quit smoking cannot be achieved without the full support of their families.
“In this journey, it would be the whole family. You will need their help,” she said.
The LCP executive said the government is also prepared to provide counseling assistance through the DOH Quitline 1558 of the Department of Health that is based at the LCP.
“Our counselors are the best at what they do. They will know how to best help you,” said Ladrera.
November is considered as the Lung Cancer Awareness Month.
