THE Quezon City government yesterday announced it will implement a partial truck ban on Mindanao and Visayas Avenues to ease traffic woes in the two major thoroughfares.
Mayor Joy Belmonte approved a resolution passed by the Quezon City Council banning trucks and other heavy vehicles from traversing the two avenues from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. daily, except Sundays, regular and special holidays.
Covered by the ban are trucks with six or more wheels and other vehicles classified by the Land Transportation Office as heavy vehicles, such as buses.
Exempted from the ban are fire trucks, garbage, hauling, dump trucks, police and military trucks or buses, and similar motor vehicles owned or under contract with the government to provide public service.
Violators will be fined P5,000 or imprisonment of one year, or both.
“The two roads have become the favorite passage of trucks because they reach their destination in Metro Manila faster. But this leads to traffic congestion, especially during rush hour, delaying motorists and commuters,” Belmonte said.
