PSA says heart diseases top PH killer illnesses in 2023

ISCHAEMIC heart diseases, neoplasms and cerebrovascular diseases remain as the leading causes of death in the country, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).

The PSA said that these top three causes of death in the country during the period of January to November 2023 were also the leading causes during the same period in 2022.

Ischaemic heart diseases were the cause of death in 100,848 cases, or 19 percent of the total deaths in the country last year.

On the other hand, neoplasms came in second with 56,736 deaths (10.7 percent share), followed by cerebrovascular diseases which accounted for 53,577 recorded cases (10.1 percent share).

Deaths due to diabetes mellitus recorded 33,699 cases, or 6.3 percent share, making it the fourth leading cause of death, while deaths due to pneumonia, which ranked fifth, recorded 32,113 cases for a six percent share.

The PSA said the provisional number of registered deaths from January to November 2023 reached 531,065, lower by 14.5 percent than the total registered deaths of 621,298 in the same period in 2022.

The province of Cavite recorded the highest number of registered deaths among provinces from January to November 2023 at 21,781 or 4.1 percent of the total deaths in the country.
