POPE Francis has tapped Filipino Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle as his special envoy to the 50th General Conference of the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences (FABC).

The conference, which will be held in Bangkok, Thailand in October, is the biggest gathering of Asian bishops.

“The pro-prefect of the Dicastery for Evangelization (Tagle) will preside over the closing Mass of the 50th General Conference of the FABC,” said CBCPNews, the official news agency of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines.

The closing Mass will be held at the Assumption Cathedral on October 30.

The 19-day conference that will start on October 12 will be held at the Baan Phu Waan Pastoral Center of the Archdiocese of Bangkok. More than 140 bishops from Asia are expected to attend the conference that is set to “reflect on the re-emerging and emerging realities and challenges of the Church in Asia.”

The assembly will also mark the 50th anniversary celebration of the FABC.

Tagle, former archbishop of Manila, has been given several assignments since he flew to the Vatican in February 2020 when he formally assumed the post of head of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples.

In May 2020, the Pope elevated him to the order of “cardinal bishops” which is the highest rank within the College of Cardinals, and is where the dean of cardinals is elected from.

In July 2020, Tagle was also named member of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue. In February 2021, he was appointed as a member of the Administration of the Patrimony of the Apostolic See (APSA) which serves as the central bank of the Vatican. In July 2021, Tagle was named member of the Congregation for the Eastern Churches. Last June, Tagle was tapped as a member of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments.

Earlier this month, London-based Roman Catholic monthly newspaper, Catholic Herald, identified Hungarian Cardinal Péter ErdÅ‘ and Tagle as leading candidates to succeed Pope Francis.
