CARDINAL Luis Antonio Tagle is being tapped anew as the special envoy of Pope Francis.
In a statement released by the Vatican, the Pontiff tapped Tagle as his special representative to the National Eucharistic Congress (NEC) of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) in June.
“The Holy Father has appointed His Eminence Cardinal Luis Antonio G. Tagle, pro-prefect of the Dicastery for Evangelization, as his special envoy to the National Eucharistic Congress of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, to be held in Lubumbashi from 4 to 11 June 2023,” the Vatican said.
In October 2022, Tagle also served as the Pope’s special envoy to the 50th General Conference of the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences (FABC) in Bangkok, Thailand.
Last January 31 to February 3, Pope Francis held a pastoral visit to Congo.
The June 2023 NEC will be the third such event in the Central African nation. It was originally scheduled in June 2020 but was postponed due to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.
The 1st NEC was held in Kisantu, Democratic Republic of Congo, way back in 1933, followed by the second meeting in Kinshasa in 1980.
