FILIPINO Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle is set to represent Pope Francis at the July 17 to 21 National Eucharistic Congress in the United States.
The 10th National Eucharistic Congress seeks to bring the Catholic Church in the US together for a national celebration of the mystery of the Eucharist in the life of the Church alongside the bishops of the United States.
The last National Eucharistic Congress in the US was held in 1941.
“As the Catholic Church in the United States prepares to celebrate its first National Eucharistic Congress in over half a century, Pope Francis will send His Eminence Luis Cardinal Tagle as his special envoy,” a report of CBCP News said quoting the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB).
It said Tagle, pro-prefect of the Dicastery for Evangelization, “will celebrate the closing Mass of the 10th National Eucharistic Congress.”
In a statement, USCCB president Archbishop Timothy Broglio said Tagle’s appointment is Pope Francis’ “gift to the Eucharistic Congress.” He said Tagle “knows the United States well” after earning a doctorate in theology at The Catholic University of America in 1991.
“Cardinal Tagle’s deep passion for apostolic mission rooted in the Eucharist is sure to have an inspirational impact for everyone attending the Congress,” Broglio said.
