POPE Francis has appointed Fr. Jose Alan Dialogo as the new bishop of Sorsogon, replacing Bishop Arturo Bastes who reached the mandatory retirement age of 75 last April.

“Dialogo’s appointment was made public by Bastes himself during the ordination of three men to the priesthood at the Sorsogon Cathedral on Tuesday morning,” the CBCP News reported.

“The news was supposed to be announced in Rome at noon (6 p.m., Manila time) but Bastes sought permission from Papal Nuncio Archbishop Gabriele Caccia to announce it earlier,” the official news agency of the CBCP added.

Before his appointment, Dialogo served as the director of the Jaime Cardinal Sin Welcome Home, a facility for retired priests, in Sampaloc, Manila.

“He is a Bilocano himself and can speak our language at once,” Bastes said of Dialogo, who hails from Naga.

CBCP News said no date has been set for the ordination and installation of Dialogo as the fifth bishop of Sorsogon.
