Poll chief not running after Marcoleta

DESPITE the grave allegations repeatedly hurled against him by the lawmaker, Elections chairman George Garcia is no longer keen on filing charges against SAGIP party-list Rep. Rodante Marcoleta.

In an interview, Garcia said he will no longer file any ethics complaint against Marcoleta over his allegations that the poll chief has several offshore bank accounts with deposits from South Korea.

“Right from the start, I have been saying that I don’t really intend to file a case. This is because I believe that those in government shouldn’t be onion-skinned,” said Garcia.

“The things they did to me, I will just leave it up to God,” he added.

He said he even convinced the group, Bayanihan para sa Karangalan at Kaunlaran ng mga Pilipino (BAYANIHAN), to forego its plans to file a complaint against Marcoleta.

Instead of running after Marcoleta, he urged the group to just help in the preparations for the May 2025 national and local polls.

“I had a dialogue with them (BAYANIHAN) and appealed to them to forego their plans to file an ethics complaint,” the poll chief said.

“I asked them to just join us in preparing for the elections. I asked them to no longer file the case, and they agreed,” added Garcia.

Previously, Garcia has not ruled out the possibility of filing an ethics complaint against Marcoleta after the latter made numerous allegations of the former supposedly having offshore accounts.

Separately, BAYANIHAN had announced that they will be filing the ethics complaint at the House of Representatives against Marcoleta stemming from his false claims against Garcia and the Comelec.

Garcia, though, said foregoing the complaint against Marcoleta does not mean that the ongoing investigations of the National Bureau of Investigation and the Anti-Money Laundering Council on the allegations against him will also be junked.

“It’s better to find a conclusion to the questions and allegations regarding me having offshore accounts,” said Garcia.
