SEN. Grace Poe yesterday asked the public to register their SIM cards before the April 26 deadline lapses.

“We urge the public to give the SIM Registration Law one final push as the deadline to register approaches. Let’s spread the word that all must enlist their SIM for their protection and peace of mind,” Poe said.

She said the government and telcos should “go all out” and encourage SIM card users to register before April 26.

Poe assured that all information provided by SIM users will be strictly confidential as “systems are in place to secure our information and protect our data.”

RA 11934 or the SIM Registration Act, the first measure signed into law by President Marcos last October last year, regulates the use of SIM cards by mandating all end-users to register their mobile phone numbers.

The measure was introduced by Poe in the Senate.

A similar bill was passed in the 18th Congress but was vetoed by then President Duterte due to the inclusion of social media accounts that also needed to be registered.

As of April 7, the Department of Information and Communications Technology said the total registered SIM cards have reached 62,170,268 or only about 36.79 percent of the total 168,977,773 SIM cards sold nationwide.
