POC meeting turns into informal caucus

IN the absence of an official notice served by Philippine Olympic Committee secretary general Atty. Ed Gastanes, a meeting among eight members of the 13-man POC Executive Board presided by chairman Steve Hontiveros yesterday turned into an informal caucus.

“Since no notice of meeting was served by our secretary general, we decided to just hold a caucus among ourselves lest we face a technicality based on our POC  constitution and by-laws,” said POC first vice president Joey Romasanta.

He cited Article 8, Section 4 of the POC charter, which states that “the president, upon his own instance, or a majority of its members upon a written request addressed to the secretary general, may call for a special meeting of the Executive Board.”

“Without the official notice served by the secretary general, our discussions and deliberations cannot be official,” he explained.

Among those who joined the online session were POC second vice president Col. (ret.) Jeff Tamayo, treasurer Julian Camacho, auditor Jonne Go, board members Atty. Clint Aranas of archery, Robert Mananquil of billiards and snooker and newly-elected International Olympic Committee Executive Board member Mikee Cojuangco-Jaworski, according to Romasanta.

Romasanta said they would write Gastanes two separate letters asking why the secretary general failed to serve the notice of yesterday’s meeting and why they had not received the minutes of the July 24 board meeting so far.
