THE PNP yesterday said safety measures have been put in place for today’s opening of in-person classes in schools and issued tips to prevent students from falling victims to crimes.

PNP spokesman Col. Jean Fajardo said the police force is pulling out all the stops to ensure the peaceful and orderly opening of classes throughout the country.

“They (students) should be careful of people they just met. Do not accept anything (for delivery) from people they just met in exchange for (cellphone) load, in exchange for food, in exchange for money,” said Fajardo.

“You do not know if the items they’ve asked you to deliver to fellow students or to other people outside the school are drugs. That’s the modus operandi of some criminals,” said Fajardo.

Fajardo said students should report to PNP assistance desks, which will be set up in the vicinity of schools, if they are approached by strangers to deliver such items so policemen can take action.

Fajardo also urged students to be careful in sharing personal and family information to new friends and avoid posting their whereabouts on social media.

“If your school hours will be extended due to extra-curricular activities, inform your parents,” Fajardo also said. “If you are availing public transportation, ride a jeep, do not use cellphone, place them inside your bag. Do not wear expensive watch, expensive jewelry.”

When riding Grab vehicles or taxis, Fajardo said students should tell their parents that they are in such a vehicle. He said students should also provide their parents the vehicle’s plate number and their current location.

“This will cause the driver to have second thoughts if he is planning something bad because the driver knows you informed others (about the travel details),” she said.

Fajardo also stressed that parents should always guide their children. “You know their friends, their acquaintances and the schedule, the start and end of their class,” she said.

The PNP had earlier said that at least 23,000 policemen will be deployed in the vicinity of the schools to prevent crimes such as snatching, pickpocketing and bullying.

“We’re very ready. The security measures adopted by the PNP for opening of classes are in place,” Fajardo said yesterday.

“Our PNP personnel are already deployed, especially in areas near the schools,” said Fajardo, adding the policemen will also man PNP assistance desks in front of schools.

PNP public affairs office chief Brig. Gen. Roderick Alba said: “It’s all systems go for the Philippine National Police for the resumption of the face-to-face classes tomorrow, August 2022.

“The PNP will ensure that the students, parents, and teachers will be safe and secure as the new school year starts,” said Alba.

Alba said a “considerable number” of policemen will be deployed outside the premises of schools nationwide to ensure peace and order.

“We have deployment in major terminals and other points of convergence to ensure peace and order during the first day of the classes. We have beefed up our police presence through regular patrolling and setting-up of Police Assistance Desks in key areas,” Alba said.
