PNP chief Guillermo Eleazar yesterday said the PNP is studying the regular conduct of regular neuro psychiatric tests among policemen in the wake of recent gruesome killings involving cops.
Eleazar said the study should be conducted to prevent killings similar to that of 52-year-old Lilybeth Valdez of Quezon City and Sonia Gregorio, 55, and her son Frank Anthony Gregorio, 25 of Paniqui, Tarlac.
Valdez was grabbed by the hair and then shot in the neck by a drunken M/Sgt. Hensie Zinampan, assigned with the Police Security Protection Group, in Fairview, Quezon City last Monday night.
The Gregorios, meanwhile, were shot at close range by Paranaque City policeman Sr. Master Sergeant Joel Nueza after an altercation on December 20. Nuezca has been discharged from the service and is in jail facing a murder case.
At present, Eleazar said psychiatric tests are only being required of policemen applying for promotion and those who are going on schooling.
“As of now, we cannot do it (conduct of psychiatric tests) to all our 220,000 personnel due to limitation,” said Eleazar. “It’s better if we will have regular (psychiatric tests) for all and that is what we are studying. That is what we are studying, to have a regular neuro psychiatric test and other interventions.”
