PNP chief Gen. Rodolfo Azurin Jr. yesterday said a total of 16,861 vehicles have been impounded by the police during the first four months of the Marcos administration.

Azurin said the vehicles, including 13,442 motorcycles, were impounded for violation of Republic Act 4136 or the Land Transportation and Traffic Code and other traffic misdeeds.

Azurin said 425 drivers of vehicles with unauthorized PNP Highway Patrol Group (HPG) logo or stickers and 311 drivers of vehicles with illegal horns were accosted.

Also accosted were 4,501 drivers of vehicles using blinkers or illegal lights and 743 motorbike drivers with illegally-modified mufflers.

Azurin also said HPG operatives issued 350,487 traffic tickets or citations during the same period.

In the campaign against carnapping, Azurin said 222 individuals were arrested and 209 vehicles were recovered from July to October.

Azurin commended the HPG for the successful implementation of the anti-carnapping law and of the law governing land transportation and traffic.

“Let us step up and intensify the enforcement of RA 4136 especially in busy highways in the country, to include areas which have been a regular scene of accidents to ensure road safety and security of the general public,” said Azurin.

Azurin appealed to motorists to follow traffic laws to avoid accidents, especially during the coming Christmas season.
