A CADET of the Philippine Military Academy died at a military hospital yesterday from esophageal cancer.
Cadet Second Class Cedrid Gadia, 23, expired around 5:15 a.m. at the AFP Medical Center on V. Luna in Quezon City, where he had been confined for nearly two months, said PMA spokeswoman Capt. Cheryl Tindog.
He is supposed to graduate in 2021.
“It is with a heavy heart that PMA announces the passing of Cadet 2nd Class Cedrick Gadia, who succumbed to his battle with cancer today… PMA is deeply saddened for this unfortunate loss, and extends our sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Cadet Second Class Gadia,” said Tindog.
Tindog said Gadia, of Candon, Ilocos Sur, was first admitted to the Fort Del Pilar Station Hospital (PMA hospital) on August 29 after he complained of stomach pain and became pale.
On September 5, Gadia was transferred to the AFP Medical Center “for further treatment and was later diagnosed with esophageal cancer, stage IV with liver and lung metastasis.”
An official of the defense department said cadets undergo annual physical examinations but these are just basic and would not be able to detect cancer.
Among tests conducted to detect esophageal cancer are MRI, CT scan, endoscopy, ultrasound, and upper GI exam
