THE Philippine Embassy in Egypt yesterday advised Filipinos in Sudan to stay indoors as clashes between the country’s army and a paramilitary group continued for the third straight day.

“Due to the ongoing conflict in Sudan, the Philippine Embassy in Cairo calls on Filipinos in Sudan to: Stay indoors. Do not go out and stay in the safety of your homes,” the embassy, which has concurrent jurisdiction on Sudan, said.

The embassy also asked Filipinos to contact and coordinate with the embassy in Cairo and the Philippine Consulate in Khartoum regarding their current circumstances.

Cairo is the capital city of Egypt while Khartoum is the capital of Sudan, where most of the fighting between Army troops loyal to General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the commander of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, are taking place.

Until recently, they were allies and even worked together in 2019 to oust Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir.

However, their alliance was ruptured on the issue to integrate the RSF into the military as part of plans to restore civilian rule in the country.

The embassy said Filipinos should send their copies of passport and residence via email, and provide basic information and the details of their next of kin in the Philippines.
