THE Philippine Embassy in Pakistan yesterday advised Filipinos, particularly in Islamabad and Rawalpindi, to be vigilant and stay in their homes due to the heightened security alert in the country brought by the current political situation.
“We call on our kababayans in Islamabad and Rawalpindi not to get out of their residence starting today and until tomorrow due to the heightened security alert, especially in Islamabad,” the embassy said in an advisory.
“Avoid public gatherings, especially at ‘street level’ and keep updated of information regarding security measures,” the embassy added.
Islamabad is Pakistan’s capital city while Rawalpindi is the fourth largest city after Karachi, Lahore and Faisalabad.
There are about 2, 000 Filipinos living and working in Pakistan, including a few hundred permanent residents married to Pakistanis.
The political situation in the country remained tense after Prime Minister Imran Khan dissolved the National Assembly and called for new elections last Sunday.
Khan’s move effectively blocked a no-confidence vote that many said would have remove him from office and threaten to plunge the nuclear-armed country into a constitutional crisis.
