THE Department of Migrant Workers yesterday urged Filipino household service workers in Hong Kong to report violations of the window cleaning rule in the special administrative region of China.
The standard employment contract states the cleaning of exterior windows may be done only if the window being cleaned is fitted with a grille that is locked and secured in a manner that prevents the grille from being opened, and that no part of the helper’s body will extend beyond the window ledge, except the arms.
Last May, HSW “Lyn” fell to her death in Hong Kong while cleaning the window of her employer’s flat.
“DMW reminds foreign recruitment agencies, employers, and household service workers on the specific rule of the Hong Kong government on window cleaning,” said Migrant Workers Secretary Susan Ople as she asked Filipino workers to report any violation of the standard employment contract.
“The DMW, in close coordination with the Philippine embassy, the Department of Foreign Affairs, and Hong Kong authorities, will pursue cases against those who will violate the said SEC provision,” Ople also said.
