THE Department of Foreign Affairs yesterday urged Filipinos in Bangladesh to stay indoors following clashes between protesters and security forces.
There are around 700 Filipinos living and working in Bangladesh.
The DFA said it has raised Alert Level 1 in Bangladesh based on the recommendation of the country’s embassy in the capital city of Dhaka.
“Alert Level 1 reminds all Filipinos in the country to remain indoors and to regularly monitor the situation during this period of transition,” the DFA said in a statement adding it is closely monitoring the situation in the said country.
“The Philippine Embassy in Dhaka and the entire government stand ready to assist Filipinos affected by the on-going political developments in the country,” it added.
The DFA called for the peaceful and orderly transition of power in Bangladesh following the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on August 5, ending her 15 years hold on the position.
Her resignation came after violent protests that led to the death and injury of hundreds of people.
“The Philippines conveys its solidarity with the people of Bangladesh and commits to efforts aimed at restoring peace and stability in Bangladesh,” the DFA added.
