Pinoy fencer sparkles for Penn State U Lions

LED by 30th Southeast Asian Games double bronze medalist Samantha Catantan, the Penn State University Nittany Lions finished second in the 2021 NCAA fencing championships that concluded at the Bryce Jordan Center in University Park, Pennsylvania  yesterday (Saturday in the US).

A freshman, Catantan led all the foil fencers, winning all of her 20 preliminary bouts to reach the women’s foil semifinals undefeated, the university reported on its sports website.

She narrowly lost to teammate Lodovica Bicego 14-15 in the semis after the latter reached the round with a record of 15 wins and five losses.

Bicego lost to Notre Dame’s Stefani Deschner 9-5 in the finals

Catantan wound up tied for third with Notre Dame’s Amita Berthier.

Bicega and Catantan were among five fencers on the Penn State U squad to earn all-American honors.

The report said the school tallied 182 points in finishing second overall to NCAA champion Notre Dame, which took its 11th national trophy with 201 points.
