ARCHBISHOP Teofilo Camomot is a step closer to being declared a “venerable” by the Catholic Church.

The Theological Commission of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints in the Vatican gave a unanimous affirmative vote of nine out of nine to the heroic virtues of the late Filipino archbishop.

“With this favorable outcome, the Cause of Beatification and Canonization of Bishop Camomot will be forwarded for further examination to the Commission of Bishops and Cardinals of the said congregation,” said the Archdiocese of Cebu in a social media post.

“Upon completion of their study, the cause will be presented to the Holy Father for his approval, then Bishop Camomot will be considered ‘venerable,’” it added.

After he is given the title “venerable,” Camomot will enter the beatification stage, wherein a miracle needs to be attributed to prayers made to the candidate after their death.

After beatification, the candidate is given the title “blessed.” Finally, the road to sainthood will end with the canonization stage, which requires a second miracle attributed to prayers made to the candidate after they have been beatified.

A successful canonization bid will result in one being declared a “saint.”

Camomot was born in Cogon, Carcar on March 3, 1914 and was ordained to priesthood on Dec. 15, 1940.

He was named auxiliary bishop of Jaro, Iloilo on March 26, 1955 and appointed coadjutor bishop of Cagayan de Oro in 1959.
