THE wife of an overseas Filipino worker (OFW) in the United Arab Emirates died in a fire that hit a residential building in Sharjah last week, the Department of Migrant Workers said yesterday.
The OFW himself “is in critical condition and is currently in the intensive care unit (ICU),” DMW Undersecretary Hans Leo Cacdac said in a radio interview.
“We are hoping and praying that he will be able to recover,” he added.
Eleven other Filipinos residing in the building sustained minor injuries.
“They are already staying in a hotel and we are monitoring their situation. They are already out of harm’s way,” said Cacdac.
He gave the assurance the OFWs affected by the incident will be assisted.
The massive fire engulfed the 39-storey residential tower in Al Nahda, Sharjah.
At least five individuals have died while 44 others were injured in the incident.
Cacdac said the DMW is waiting for details of the fire investigation being conducted by local authorities “so that we will know if there is a need for potential legal action.
