THE condition of former Senate President Aquilino “Nene” Pimentel Jr. is still being monitored, his daughter Human Rights Commissioner Gwendolyn Pimentel-Gana said yesterday.

“Tatay’s vital signs are still being closely monitored. We are praying for God’s grace of healing,” Gana said in a text message without giving additional details.

Gana also expressed thanks for the prayers for the 85-year-old statesman.

“The family appreciates all the outpouring of love and support,” she said.

Pimentel’s confinement in the intensive care unit was announced by Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan public information chief Ronwald Munsayac on Tuesday evening.

Pimentel’s son, Sen. Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III, confirmed the news by sharing Munsayac’s Twitter announcement.

Pimentel founded the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino in 1982. In 1986, it merged with the Lakas ng Bayan the party, which was founded by the late former senator Benigno Aquino Jr.

Pimentel was senator from 1987 to 1992, and again from 1998 to 2010. He served as Senate Minority Floor Leader from 2001 to 2002, and 2004 to 2010.

He was voted Senate President from 2000 to 2001. He assisted then Chief Justice Hilario Davide Jr. in presiding over the impeachment trial of former president Joseph Estrada.
