NINETY-NINE overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) from Sudan arrived home last Sunday night, the largest batch of repatriates from the war-torn state.
In a social media post, the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) reported the arrival of 99 OFWs at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 1 in Parañaque City aboard Saudi Airlines Flight SV870.
“This group of 99 OFWs is the largest to return to the country since repatriation flights started last April 29,” said the DMW.
The arrival of the 99 OFWs brings to almost 400 the total number of those repatriated from Sudan.
Government officials, led by DMW Secretary Susan Ople, welcomed the returning OFWs, along with officials and personnel of the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) and the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA).
The returning OFWs were welcomed with a P50,000 financial assistance from the DMW, with another P50,000 from OWWA set to follow.
Other types of assistance provided by DMW and OWWA are airport assistance, food aid, hotel accommodation while waiting for their flights to Visayas/Mindanao, and transportation assistance.
Last month, clashes broke out across Sudan, particularly in the capital city of Khartoum, between the rival camps of Sudan military leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) commander Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo.
