THE Henley Global Passport Index yesterday said the Philippine passport ranked 73rd among the world’s most powerful passports, a five- spot jump from its 78th spot last year.

The passport index is based on data and information from the International Air Transport Association, with passports being scored depending on the visa requirement for each country or destination.

The London-based global citizenship and residence advisory firm Henley & Partners noted that with their passport, Filipinos can visit without getting a visa 69 destinations worldwide.

Among the countries that do not require Philippine residents to present a visa upon entry are Barbados, Braz, Brunei, Cambodia, Fiji, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Laos, Macao, Malaysia, Maldives, Morocco, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.

The Philippines ranked 80th in 2022, 77th in 2021, and 74th in 2020, based on the same global index.

The Henley Global Passport Index ranked Japan, Singapore, France, Italy, Germany, and Spain passports as the most powerful, with their citizens able to visit 194 out of 227 global destinations without the need to secure visas.

In second spot are South Korea and Finland with their citizens able to visit 193 destinations without visas, followed by Austria, Denmark, Ireland, and the Netherlands with 192 destinations; Belgium, Norway, Portugal, Luxemburg and the United Kingdom in fourth place with 191 destinations; and Greece, Malta and Switzerland in the fifth spot with 190 destinations.

In sixth spot are Australia, Czechia, New Zealand, and Poland with 189 destinations; followed by Canada, the United Stated and Hungary with 188 destinations; Estonia and Lithuania with 187 destinations; Latvia, Slovakia and Slovenia with 186 destinations; and at 10th spot is Iceland with 185 destinations.

Strife-torn Afghanistan, on the other hand, still has the least powerful passport at 28th place, though it went up from last year’s 27th spot.
