PH has 29 more Omicron cases

THE Department of Health (DOH) yesterday reported 29 additional cases of the Omicron (B.1.1.529) variant has been detected, bringing the total cases of the highly transmissible strain of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in the country to 43.

In a statement, the DOH said the 29 new cases are composed of 10 returning overseas Filipinos (ROF) and 19 local cases with indicated addresses in the National Capital Region.

They were detected from the 48 samples sequenced by the Philippine Genome Center (PGC) last January 2, 2022.

Of the 19 local cases, the DOH said 14 cases are still active, three cases have recovered, while the status of the two remaining cases are still being verified.

On the other hand, the DOH said that among the ROFs, six cases are still active, three cases have recovered, while the status of the remaining one case is still being verified.

The DOH said it is still verifying the test results and health status of all passengers of the flights of the ROFs to determine if there are other confirmed cases or passengers who have become symptomatic after arrival.

Aside from the additional Omicron variant cases, the DOH said more Delta variant cases were also detected.

“There were 18 positive for the Delta (B.1.617.2) variant,” said the DOH, adding that eight of the new cases are returning Filipinos, while the other 10 are local cases and had NCR as their indicated addresses.

The latest number brings the total number of confirmed Delta variant cases in the country to 8,497.

The DOH said the one other sequenced sample had no lineage assigned.

Meanwhile, Mayor Vico Sotto said the Pasig City Children’s Hospital — Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Pasig (PCCH-PLP) modular tent, which was previously used as a vaccination site, has been converted into a COVID-19 referral center to address the rising number of cases in the city.

Sotto said vaccination activities scheduled at the PCCH-PLP have been transferred to the Pasig City General Hospital.

The city has 659 active COVID cases, a sharp increase to the 10 active cases recorded last December 15. — With Christian Oineza
