MIGRANT Workers Secretary Susan Ople yesterday ordered the blacklisting of a Hong Kong employer who was found guilty of assaulting her Filipino domestic worker.

Ople said Chow Ching-yee “and her entire household” will be barred from hiring a Filipino domestic worker “for life.”

Last Monday, the Sha Tin Court in Hong Kong slapped Chow, a retired teacher, a suspended jail sentence for assaulting Ruby Funa Caman who refused to massage her hands.

Reports said Chow, 65, has pleaded guilty to one count of common assault and told police she pulled Caman’s hair and slapped her during an argument in April.

Ople said she gave the instruction to blacklist Chow to Undersecretary Bernard Olalia who is in charge of adjudication.

On Caman, Ople said she has found a new employer and “is doing well.”

She said Caman will still receive assistance from the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) despite having found work.

“OWWA is assisting Ruby so she could receive her subsistence allowance, and Administrator Arnell Ignacio has been instructed to provide school financial assistance to Ruby’s 10-year-child,” she said.

Ople asked other Filipino workers in Hong Kong to notify their families or close friends if they are being abused, and to report to the Hong Kong government via its 999 emergency hotline.

“We strongly advocate against all forms of violence and harassment in the workplace,” Ople said.
