THE Philippine Football Federation, organizer of the Philippines Football League, last Tuesday suspended financially-strapped Global FC for 90 days and approved the provisional PFL license of newcomer Maharlika FC.

In a decision handed down by the three-man PFF Club Licensing First Instance Body led by former PFF general secretary Atty. Rolly Tulay, Global was suspended for failing to meet its obligations to its players, officials and staff, according to a post on the PFF website.
Several players of the club led by Australian Marc Jarvis have complained publicly that it owes them wages amounting to thousands of pesos individually.

The PFL and the Games and Amusements Board, which regulates pro sports, had earlier notified Global to meet its obligations or face sanctions

The panel, which also included lawyers Loren Martinez and Abigail Sarandi, also demanded the club to show within 90 days that its “overdue payables” were settled or else its license would be revoked, making it ineligible to take part in any PFL-sanctioned event.

The provisional license granted to Maharlika paves the way for its participation in the 2020 PFL season scheduled to kick off next month.

The players and staff of the new club, a club organized by former national team standout Anton del Rosario and football enthusiast and actor Daniel Matsunaga, were required to undergo full tests for the COVID-19 virus yesterday at the PFF headquarters in Pasig.

This is prerequisite set by the local football body under the guidelines contained in the Joint Administrative Order for its training at the PFF national training center field in Carmona, Cavite.

Issued last July, the JAO is the set of health protocols conceived and approved by the GAB, Philippine Sports Commission, Department of Health and the Inter-Agency Task Force overseeing the virus crisis for pro teams to resume training.

Maharlika will be the fifth pro club in the league, aside from Stallion-Laguna, United City, Kaya-Iloilo, and Mendiola, with the Azkals Developmental Team completing the six-team cast for the PFL’s tournament backed by Qatar International Airways.

PFL commissioner Coco Torre said during the Philippine Sportswriters Association forum last Tuesday that the tourney will be a double-round event and will be closed to the public, although the matches will be streamed live from the PFF national training center pitch.
