THE Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency is set to burn today a ton of shabu, worth about P6.8 billion, in compliance with President Duterte’s directive to destroy drugs recovered in the war against drugs.
Sen. Christopher “Bong” Go will grace the ceremony to be held at the facility of the Integrated Waste Management Inc. in Trece Martirez, Cavite.
Last week, Duterte ordered law enforcement agencies to destroy by this week all recovered drugs to prevent them from being recycled or resold to in the illegal drugs market.
“It’s an assurance to the people that drugs are not being recycled, it’s an assurance to the people that the drugs are really being destroyed regularly,” said PDEA spokesman Derrick Carreon.
“It’s not the first time we’re doing this,” added Carreon, noting that two tons of illegal drugs, worth P13.2 billion, were burned last August 21.
“Definitely, after tomorrow, another (burning) will follow,” he said.
As of yesterday, Carreon said the PDEA was still receiving illegal drugs from other law enforcement agencies.
“Up now, some are still turning over… Being a former director (of PDEA Laboratory Service), I know for a fact that others will turn over (drugs for destruction) until tonight,” said Carreon.
