Palace declares 7 long weekends for 2023

FILIPINOS can look forward to seven long weekends next year as Malacañang released yesterday the list of regular holidays and special non-working days for 2023.

Last August 22, President Marcos Jr. signed Proclamation 42 declaring “the Regular Holidays and Special (Non-Working) Days for the Year 2023” and directed the Department of Labor and Employment to issue the corresponding implementing guidelines for their observance.

The long weekends, which start either on a Friday to Sunday or a Saturday to Monday, are the Holy Week in April 6 to 9; May 1, Labor Day; June 12, Independence Day; August 21, Ninoy Aquino Day; August 28, National Heroes’ Day, December 8, Immaculate Conception Day; and December 25, Christmas.

The Regular Holidays include January 1 (Sunday), New Year’s Day; April 6 Maundy Thursday, April 7; Good Friday, April 9 (Sunday), Araw ng Kagitingan; May 1 (Monday), Labor Day; June 12 (Monday), Independence Day; August 28 (last Monday of August), National Heroes Day; November 30 (Thursday), Bonifacio Day; December 25 (Monday), Christmas Day; and December 30 (Saturday), Rizal Day.

The Special Non-Working Days are February 1 (Tuesday), Chinese New Year; February 25 (Saturday), EDSA People Power Revolution Anniversary; April 8, Black Saturday; August 21 (Monday), Ninoy Aquino Day; November 1 (Wednesday), All Saints’ Day; November 2 (Thursday), All Souls’ Day; December 8 (Friday), Immaculate Conception Day; December 31 (Sunday) – Last Day of the Year.

Two additional regular holidays that will also be observed in 2023 are the Muslim holidays Eid’l Fitr and Eid’l Adha, but their approximate dates will be dependent on the Islamic and moon sightings.

The proclamation takes effect immediately and shall be published in a newspaper of general circulation.
