‘Paeng’ leaves P13.07B damage to agriculture, infrastructure

THE National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said the cost of damage to agriculture and infrastructure from severe tropical storm “Paeng” has reached P13.07 billion.

In a situational report last Saturday night, the Camp Aguinaldo-based agency also reported two additional deaths due to Paeng, bringing the death toll to 164, with 28 others still missing.

NDRRMC placed the cost of damage to agriculture in 12 regions at P7.21 billion, from P6.4 billion the previous day.

The three regions that suffered the most damage to agriculture were Western Visayas (P2.63 billion), Cagayan Valley region (P1.31 billion); and Bicol region (P927.62 million).

The other regions which incurred damage to agriculture were Ilocos region, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Zamboanga Peninsula, Northern Mindanao, Davao region, Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), and Cordillera Administrative Region.

The cost of damage to infrastructure in 13 regions remained at P5.86 billion, led by Calabarzon (P1.76 billion), Mimaropa (P1.01 billion), and Bicol region (P793.37 million).

NDRRMC said the other regions which registered damage to infrastructure were Ilocos region, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Western Visayas, Central Visayas, Northern Mindanao, Davao region, Soccsksargen, BARMM and CAR.

It said 6,634 houses were “totally damaged” and 61,788 others were “partially damaged” in Ilocos region, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Bicol region, Western Visayas, Central Visayas, Eastern Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula, Northern Mindanao, Davao region, Soccsksargen, Caraga, BARMM and CAR.

NDRRMC placed the cost of damage to houses at P17.2 million.

The council also reported two more deaths in BARRM, bringing to 164 the reported deaths due to Paeng.

BARRM had the highest number of deaths with 68, followed by Western Visayas (37), Calabarzon (33).

Five people died in Eastern Visayas; four each in Zamboanga Peninsula, Soccsksargen; three each in Cagayan Valley and Mimaropa; two each in Central Luzon, Bicol region, Central Visayas; and one in CAR.

NDRRMC said 134 of these deaths have been confirmed while the rest are still being validated. The confirmed deaths are 68 in BARMM; 34 in Western Visayas; 23 in Calabarzon; three each in Mimaropa and Soccsksargen, two in Central Luzon, and one in CAR.

Twenty-eight are still reported missing — 13 in BARMM; five in Western Visayas; four in Calabarzon; three in Eastern Visayas; and one each in Cagayan Valley, Mimaropa, and CAR.

Paeng has affected 1,473,826 families or 5,982,377 individuals in 10,579 barangays in all of the country’s 17 regions.

Of the number, 799,954 families or 339,824 individuals were displaced. The number is now down to 65,702 families or 327,048 individuals as of Saturday night — 3,652 families or 17,202 individuals are staying in 113 evacuation centers while 62,050 families or 309,846 individuals are with their relatives and friends.
