THE National Shrine of Saint Padre Pio in Santo Tomas, Batangas is looking at attaining international stature after the National Shrine of Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage, popularly known as the Antipolo Church, was formally elevated to an international shrine in March last year.

The Antipolo Church is the only international shrine in the Philippines.

The designation of an international shrine requires approval from the Vatican.

The Padre Pio shrine houses several first-class relics of the Italian saint, attracting hundreds of thousands of pilgrims seeking blessings from God through the intercession of St. Padre Pio.

In a report of the CBCP News, the National Shrine of Saint Padre Pio is aiming to get international shrine title based on the book “Enlarging the Space of our Tent” recently published by the Archdiocese of Lipa.

“A concrete manifestation of the Archdiocese’s efforts to enlarge its tent is the National Shrine of Saint Padre Pio located in Sto. Tomas, Batangas. This sacred place aspires to become an international shrine. This dream reflects the archdiocese’s desire to extend its influence far beyond its local and immediate surroundings and welcome people of diverse cultures and nationalities to experience the spiritual richness it offers,” CBCP News said quoting from the book.

“The National Shrine of St. Padre Pio seeks to serve as a beacon of unity, drawing followers from far and wide to participate in its solemn religious ceremonies of worship and healing, and share in the collective faith journey,” it added.

In 2003, the Parish of St. Padre Pio was canonically erected by then Lipa Archbishop Gaudencio Rosales, thus becoming the first parish church in the Philippines under the patronage of the Capuchin saint.
