OVER P97 million worth of suspected shabu and marijuana were seized and 750 suspected drug peddlers were arrested the past two weeks in Central Visayas, the new regional police director reported yesterday.

Brig. Gen. Valeriano de Leon said three other suspected drug pushers were killed in the region from Oct. 27, when he assumed his post as Central Visayas regional police director, up to Nov. 8.

De Leon said he instructed all his subordinate units to intensify the campaign against all forms of illegal drugs when he took over the helm of the Central Visayas regional police office.

De Leon said a total of 496 anti-drug operations were held from Oct. 27 to Nov. 8, leading to the arrest of 750 drug peddlers in Negros Oriental, Cebu, Cebu City, Mandaue City and Lapu-Lapu City.

“Three drug personalities died in these police operations,” De Leon said. He did not identify the three.

He said the operations led to the recovery of 10.2 kilos of suspected shabu worth P69.7 million and 229.9 kilos of marijuana worth P27.5 million.

“There shall be more intelligence-driven operations against the illegal-drug industry in our area of responsibility,” De Leon said.

“With the recent accomplishment, I and my men on the ground will continue to do our mandated tasks as law enforcement officers and eradicate this drug menace in Central Visayas. I will not rest until all of them will be arrested,” added De Leon.

De Leon also vowed to rid the regional police of scalawags, saying any policeman found involved in illegal drugs will be held criminally and administratively liable, and dismissed from the service.

Meanwhile, two men were arrested in separate anti-drug operations in the cities of Mandaluyong and Pasig.

Brig. Gen Johnson Almazan, Eastern police district director, identified the two as Gene Paulo Manuel, 26; and Alvin Flores, 40. Seized from them were six sachets of suspected shabu. — With Christian Oineza
