Over 140K ‘Odette’ victims still in evacuation centers

MORE than a month since typhoon “Odette” slammed into the country, more than 140,000 people remain in close to 1,000 evacuation centers in six regions, according to the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).

The DSWD- Disaster Response Operations Monitoring and Information Center (DROMIC) said that as of January 15, there were still 978 evacuation centers in Regions IV-A (Mimaropa), VI (Western Visayas), VII (central Visayas), VIII (Eastern Visayas), X (Northern Mindanao), and XIII (Caraga) housing 37,660 families or 146,344 persons, while 12,116 families (41,547 persons) were still staying with their relatives or friends.

Most of the evacuation centers are in Eastern Visayas with 403, Caraga with 256, and Central Visayas with 255.

The DSWD said a total of P660.5 million worth of food and non-food assistance had been provided to the affected families, which includes P446,25 million from the department, P189.955 million from local government units, P7.989 million from non-government organizations (NGOs), and P16.3 million from other partners.
