ONLINE chess to kick off the NCAA’s 96th season? That’s getting closer to reality.

A highly-reliable Malaya-Business Insight insider yesterday said the league is likely to tackle today in a meeting its plan to launch its new season with an online chess tourney.

“Ang isang pag-uusapan siguro namin today is iyong online chess,” the insider, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said.

“Itutuloy na namin iyong online chess para magsimula lang tapos idi-discuss namin iyong ibang possible na online games.”

Set to be hosted by Letran, the new season of the country’s oldest collegiate league will be held with only the four mandatory sports — basketball, volleyball, swimming, and track and field — under a school-based bubble concept in the second quarter this year.

The Commission on Higher Education released the safety and health guidelines for the resumption of varsity training last October.

Nearly three months after, collegiate leagues are still waiting for the green light from the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases.

The Philippine Sports Commission also crafted guidelines for the conduct of collegiate tournaments last December.

The insider said while waiting for the IATF nod, the league will make do with online games.
