ADMINISTRATION allies and candidates in the May elections yesterday thanked President Duterte for the services he rendered in the past years and for being a “true leader and public servant.”

House majority leader and Lakas Christian Muslim Democrats president Martin Romualdez, presidential aspirant Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., former presidential legal counsel and senatorial candidate Salvador Panelo, and former anti-corruption commissioner and senatorial bet Greco Belgica all sent their well wishes to the President, who marked his 77th birthday in Davao City with his family.

Romualdez said he is praying that God will grant Duterte more years of good health, peace and joy both in his public and private life, and guide him to continue seeking ways to improve the living condition of the people and provide a safe community for every Filipino family.

“As we join him in celebration, we also wish to express the appreciation of a grateful nation for all the personal sacrifices that the President has made to serve his fellow countrymen.

Rest assured, Mr. President, that your service to the country will be remembered in generations to come… Thank you for giving us hope and for laying the groundwork of a better tomorrow for the Filipinos,” he said.

Marcos said the continuing high trust ratings of the President is proof that he is a “true leader and public servant” of the Filipino people.

“He has been a true leader and he has been a true servant of the people that is why people trust him and still believe in him,” he said, adding that he had learned a lot from Duterte.

Belgica said Duterte has been the inspiration for public servants to serve with honesty and provide quality services.

“I wish you happiness, good health and the realization of your desires. May you live a thousand years boss! Happy, Happy Birthday!” Belgica said.

Panelo said while Duterte is now preparing for the end of his term as president, people will recognize him for “laying the foundations of a stable economy, putting it in place with the appropriate legislation and economic measures, accompanied by the phenomenal and dizzying infrastructure dazzling the unbelievers and detractors.

“We wish you the best of the best of everything that will make your post retirement a manna from heaven and the remaining years of your productive and meaningful life in blissful enjoyment and in good health in the company of your family and loved ones,” he added.

Communications Secretary Martin Andanar said the President wished that the coming elections would be honest, peaceful and orderly.

Presidential candidate Sen. Panfilo Lacson, in a tweet, said: “Happy 77th birthday Mr. President. I wish you good health and peaceful life after noontime on June 30. We may have disagreed on several issues, even called each other out a few times, but I can never forget you were there for me in one of my difficult times in the distant past.”

Lacson said he had always considered the President as a friend even if they sometimes had opposing views on certain issues.

He recalled Duterte was one of the people who comforted him when he was down due to the Kuratong Baleleng issue in the mid-90s when he headed Task Force Habagat of the defunct Presidential Anti-Crime Commission then led by Vice President Joseph Estrada. — With Raymond Africa
