AMID the surge in coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases, the number of healthcare workers being infected has been on a steady decline, according to the Department of Health

“Since April, we have already seen a huge decrease in the number of healthcare worker infections,” Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said in a briefing last Friday.

She said that from 19.96 percent of infected healthcare workers recorded on April 30, the number was down to 9.25 percent on June 29, and to 6.72 percent as of July 11.

Of around 55,000 COVID-19 cases, 3,643 are medical frontliners.

Vergeire attributed the steady decline to the strict implementation of safety protocols.

“We enhanced the implementation of our infection prevention and control measures in hospital settings, thus resulting in the decline in cases,” she said.

She assured the public that the DOH will continue to provide an adequate supply of personal protective equipment to healthcare workers.

“We will continue to closely coordinate with all hospitals to ensure the safety of our frontliners against the virus. Procurement for the needed PPE will also continue,” said Vergeire.
