AN answer to the burning question whether the National University women’s volleyball squad held workouts despite the government-imposed lockdown remains hanging in the air.
NU, which said it will issue an official statement last Monday, is still tightlipped on the allegations that its players did voluntary workouts at the school campus and at the Inspire Sports Academy in Calamba, Laguna based on photos and videos that surfaced online. The complex is located inside the NU-Laguna campus.
Lady Bulldogs tactician Norman Miguel could not be reached for comment, while assistant coach Regine Diego said the school will only break its silence if necessary.
“The school will issue an official statement regarding this if it’s necessary,” Diego told Malaya-Business Insight.
A highly-reliable source told Malaya-Business Insight yesterday that the NU lady spikers were left stranded at their dormitory located just across the school at the start of the deadly COVID-19 pandemic.
Metro Manila was placed under the strict enhanced community quarantine last March 17.
The 82nd UAAP season, including the women’s volleyball tournament, was called off for good last April 7.
“Sure ako na talagang naabutan sila ng lockdown sa NU. Pero hindi ko alam kung totoo iyong nag-training sila voluntarily,” said the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
“Basta sure ako na naiwan sila sa dorm. Baka nag-take advantage na lang ang NU? Tapat lang kasi ng NU ang dorm nila,” the source added.
The same source forwarded a group photo of the team where players looked like they have just finished their workout. The Instagram photo was uploaded by sophomore libero Jennifer Nierva and dated June 4 in Laguna.
