GOVERNMENT troops captured a 65-year-old New People’s Army rebel and seized four improvised bombs and other war materiel after a firefight in Borongan City in Eastern Samar on Sunday afternoon.
The Army’s 78th Infantry Battalion named the captured rebel as Bienvenido Abagancia, a resident of Barangay Layo, Pinabacdao town in Western Samar.
Abagancia was apprehended by soldiers after a 30-minute firefight that broke out around 3:30 p.m. in Sitio Manaba in Barangay Pinanag-an in Borongan City, said 1Lt. Sherfrancis Saquing, 78th IB civil military operations officer.
Soldiers recovered at the encounter site four improvised bombs, an improvised 7.62 rifle, a locally-made cal. 38 revolver, 17 magazines for M16 and M14 rifles, hundreds of ammunition, and three backpacks containing documents and personal belongings. — Victor Reyes
