A NEW People’s Army rebel was killed in a firefight with government troops in Baao town in Camarines Sur on Monday night, the military reported yesterday.
The Army’s 9th Infantry Division (ID) said the encounter occurred at around 10:15 a.m. in Barangay Teresa, involving troops of the Army’s 49th Infantry Battalion.
9th ID spokesman Maj. John Paul Belleza said the soldiers, who were engaged in the Retooled Community Support Program in the barangay, conducted a security operation after receiving information from residents about the presence of NPA rebels in their community.
“The troops immediately acted on the information and later encountered five members of the CTG (communist terrorist group),” Belleza said.
Belleza said one of the rebels, who has yet to be identified, died in the eight-minute firefight.
